Seismic strengthening,
done properly

New Zealand buildings take more than earthquakes: wind, storms, and time all pull at them. We provide seismic and earthquake strengthening services that bring existing structures up to what this country puts them through.

Overview

Christchurch changed what we all expect an existing building to be able to survive.

Plenty of buildings on this coast were designed to a standard nobody would accept today. Seismic strengthening of existing buildings is specialist work: it starts with a chartered professional engineer, not with a builder guessing at a fix.

We organise the earthquake-prone building assessment in NZ, build to the engineer’s design, and stage the work so a home stays liveable or a business stays open while we do it.

What's included

What an upgrade
involves

Scope follows the engineer’s report, so no two are identical. These are the pieces our seismic strengthening services usually include.

Seismic assessment

A chartered professional seismic engineer assesses the building and reports on how it would perform.

Earthquake-prone building assessment

Checking the building against the current standard, and what its rating means for your obligations as an owner.

Strengthening design

The engineer specifies the seismic engineering services the job needs; we price it and tell you what each option will actually mean on site.

Structural reinforcement

Foundations, bracing, connections, and diaphragms brought up to the standard specified by our structural engineers.

Staged construction

Work sequenced around tenants, trading hours or a family still living there, where the building allows it.

Internal safety

Practical fixings and internal recommendations, following EQC guidance, for the things that do the damage in a shake.

Every earthquake strengthening upgrade is designed by a chartered professional engineer. We build to that design instead of substituting our judgement for theirs.

How it works

From assessment
to sign-off

Engineer first, always.

  1. 01

    Assessment

We bring in a chartered professional seismic engineer to assess the building and report on its seismic performance.

  2. 02

    Compliance review

We work through what the report means: whether the building is earthquake-prone, and what you are required to do about it and by when.

  3. 03

    Design and pricing

The engineer designs the strengthening as part of our seismic engineering services. We price it, set out the options, and tell you what each one does to the building and to your timeframe.

  4. 04

    The work

Our crew carries out the upgrade to the engineer’s design, staged around the people using the building.

  5. 05

    Verification

Engineer sign-off, council inspections and code compliance, plus internal safety recommendations before we leave.

Why pick us

Why this work
suits us

Seismic strengthening is unforgiving. It rewards experience, good engineers and someone who stays across the detail.

Large-scale experience

We completed the seismic upgrade of the Bank of New Zealand building in Whitianga: commercial-scale strengthening on the Coromandel, delivered to an engineer’s specification by builders who work as serious seismic strengthening contractors, not just as a sideline.

The right engineers

Long-standing relationships with chartered professional structural and seismic engineers mean the assessment and the design come from people who do this properly.

One point of contact

Craig is your contact from the first conversation to the final inspection, and he doesn't hand that off. If you're managing this from Auckland or further, you deal with one person who knows the answer.

In their words
Amazing, very professional team. The finished outcome has exceeded our expectations.

FAQs

Questions we hear about seismic upgrades

The clearest sign is an earthquake-prone rating from your council, but plenty of owners come to us with less than that: a builder’s comment, an insurer’s question, or just an older building on this coast that has never been assessed.

If you’re unsure, the answer starts with a seismic assessment from a chartered professional engineer, not a guess from us or anyone else. We can arrange that assessment and talk you through what the report means once it lands.

Yes. Our commercial building strengthening work in the Coromandel follows the same approach as it is for a home: engineer-led assessment, an engineer's design, and staged construction that keeps a business trading while the work happens around it.

Often, yes. It depends on what the engineer's design calls for and how the building is laid out. We stage the work around tenants or a family living there wherever the building and the engineer allow it. We'll tell you honestly at pricing stage if a particular job can't be done that way.

We do. Long-standing relationships with chartered professional engineers are one of the reasons clients come to us for seismic strengthening services and earthquake strengthening services rather than assembling the team themselves. If you already have an engineer and a report, we will price and build to their design.

A chartered professional engineer inspects the building and rates it against the current New Zealand standard for earthquake-prone buildings, then reports on what that rating means and what you're required to do about it, and by when. It's the starting point for every seismic strengthening of buildings project we take on, and we organise the earthquake-prone building assessment for you rather than leaving you to find your own way through it.

Yes. Most of our seismic retrofitting work is based around Whitianga, but our structural strengthening contractors take on projects right across the eastern Coromandel, from Hahei to Tairua. Get in touch with where the building is and we'll tell you honestly whether it's within reach.

your building?

Tell us what you have: a report, a council notice, or just a concern, and we will tell you what the next step actually is. Craig reads every enquiry personally.
